Safe Schools Design Guidelines

The State of Florida Public School System (K-12) has experienced a dramatic increase in reported crimes. This has forced school districts to invest millions of dollars in safety and security programs focused on preventing harm to both students and physical plants. At the request of the Florida Department of Education, the Florida Center examined strategies for reducing these events through proper building and site design. The Center researched the principles and strategies of Crime Prevention Through Enviromental Design (CPTED) as they related to schools and developed a series of guidelines geared towards the physical design of schools. The Design Guidelines published as part of this project will be made available to principals and administrators throughout the state.
